Hello and welcome to pinningmywords! My name is Virginia, but for my whole life I’ve been called Pin. I’m an Australian living in Tangier, via Paris (it was a mistake that I ended up in Tangier, but a jolly good one), and the purpose of this blog is to provide you with a snapshot of musings from wherever I sit. At this stage, it’s North Africa. I hope you’ll enjoy, and thank you for following.

•Surprise• This one, a favourite in my life and someone who always gets me, encourages me and makes me laugh like a magpie, turned up in London on the weekend. Lucky me! I’m the godmother to her gorgeous baby girl who is three and apparently ready to regroup with me at 13 but has drawn me a picture for my 40th against the will of her brother who is five, and has known me ‘much longer.’ All of that aside, tonight was a treat beyond all treats and one I will always treasure. @edwina.machado you are one in an absolute million. You have been for the (more than) 25 years that I’ve known you and I’m thrilled that you helped kicked off my week of Edwina’s. •Day bed• I desperately want one of these in my flat in Tangier. I may or may not have shot the glorious thing from every angle as I enjoyed relative peace and quiet with little snippets of sun peeping through the rain clouds. •Summer• Why does London feel the need to be miserable EVERY time I visit in summer. I’ve got soggy feet and a £5 pound umbrella that wants to do a gymnastics class rather than keep me dry. But as always, it’s heaven to be back seeing friends and I’m writing because it’s raining. •Happy• When we were 13, we sat our entrance exams at school and caught each other’s eyes, smiling nervously. I ended up in a maths class custom built for me and perhaps two others (for all the wrong reasons) and I never really saw @hanny_noc in the classroom ever again. But during our school years and all that have followed, we’ve laughed until we cried amongst a wonderful group of girls who have been like sisters for many years. Tonight was so special, our first catch up in almost two years and I’ll blame my bung eye on laughing too much, but really it’s just bung (but we did laugh until we cried for the duration of an entire dinner of chicken curry fit for fifteen) ♥️ • • • • #friendship #london #oldfriends

•Sisters• I always count my blessings that I’m one of four girls, it’s a gift - three ready made best friends who are licenced to tell the truth, and the whole truth. Oh heck, I’ve bothered them at times but, I just adore my three sisters- especially in the knowledge that they are stuck with me for life. These girls are the younger two of four girls and they too share the same feelings about sisterhood. They follow my blog and were in touch when they began planning their arrival in Tangier - their first stop in Morocco. My gut told me that they should really come and stay, and I’m thrilled that they did. We’ve just had two days of pure laughter and hysterics as I showed them ‘my Tangier.’ Both were barely born when I left the school that they too went on to study at in Australia, and tonight as I hang the sheets out to dry, I reflect on a special time with two precious girls who I didn’t know when they arrived, but felt like I had known forever when they left this morning. @anastasiacostelloe and @semele.costelloe your Mum and Dad must be so proud of the girls that you are and the beautiful bond that you share. @edwinaaff these two have made me even more excited about your pending visit- now I’m really counting the days ♥️ • • • • #sisters #travel #morocco #maroc #friendship #love #together #forever

•Coiffeur• In its day, this would have been my type of hair-salon. That pink and that blue along with that matching ladder- the mind ticked and I wanted to move in immediately. •The final call• From my kitchen balcony this evening, as the dusk call to prayer signalled lftour in competition with birdsong. All day we’d been debating ‘will l’Eid be tomorrow or Thursday?’ The odds were for tomorrow (Insha’allah) after many countries celebrated l’Eid- the end of Ramadan, today. It’s been a month of charity and sacrifice, good humour and a huge amount of new knowledge for me as a new comer to Morocco after slinking in halfway through the holy month last year. Half an hour after I filmed this, the local news channels reported that indeed (insha’allah) tomorrow is our day. I have no idea how anyone plans for what is the equivalent of Christmas with just twelve hours notice, but they do, and they will. Over the past month, I’ve seen my fair share of taxis crashing into flower pots lining the roads as drivers race home for harira, but the smiles, the kindness and the willingness to keep on keeping on, has been utterly admirable. •On Air• Today I was thrilled to join Aziz and the crew at Cap Radio Maroc for the second time this month for a further discussion about my observations as a foreigner living in Tangier during Ramadan. As we head into the final week and l’eid is just days away, the streets are a bustle with men in white and the women looking ready for a rest, especially with today being a special day of prayers (Laylate AL-Kader). It’s been an incredibly important month for me and I have learnt so much- and moments like these in the studio only make it all the more fulfilling.
